Kremlin: Russia will respond to NATO’s reinforcement in Poland

UAWIRE, 14 June 2017

If there is a reinforcement of the US military contingent in Poland, Russia will take all military, political and economic measures in the context of necessary defense, said Frants Klintsevich, first deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, to RIA Novosti.

Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that he intends to discuss the matter of enlarging the American military presence in the country with US President Donald Trump during his visit.

Commenting on Duda’s position, Klintsevich noted that an enlargement of the American military presence in Poland would “result in an increase of the real threat to Russia’s safety”.

“In the context of necessary defense, all measures of a military, political, and economic and any other nature which are necessary in such cases will be taken by us,” the politician stressed.

According to Klintsevich, after NATO’s Warsaw summit, the Polish authorities clearly want to present the country as the main stronghold of the West in its opposition of Russia on the European continent.

President Andrzej Duda’s intention to ask for an increase in the American military presence in Poland is “the continuation of the same seditious, provocative line,” he added.

“I don’t know what it is based on – the nationalism of a small nation or the ambition of Poland’s current leadership, which has nothing better than to draw attention to itself, but this is a deliberate exacerbation of the tension in Europe,” Klintsevich stressed.

  1. Mr Klintsevich may have something here. Only two or three days ago, the new French president, Macron, was battering the Poles for their pathetic attitudes in EC meetings. Clearly they, and the Hungarians, were not behaving as the rest expected them to.

    1. There is a strong political undercurrent of unrest in the EU between the states in the East and the States in the West. Jean-Claude Junker may have more to focus on in the not-too-distant future other than Brexit – like preventing the European Union from fracturing due to ideological difeerences over security and defence.

  2. Poland’s current leadership is… well to put it bluntly pathetic and thanks to them Poland is loosing hard in EU, but reinforcement of the US military contingent in Poland is just a response to Russia’s army movement. The NATO-Russia treaty from 97 is now practically dead anyway.

    1. Thanks for your input. It is difficult to gauge what is happening in the Polish Government from over here in the UK. The government seems unstable, yet they are promising to increase Poland’s military power considerably in response to a perceived Russian threat.
